چکیده
This was a 45-year-old woman that initially consulted for a progressive hearing loss and dizziness of some 6 months of evolution. There were no notable relevant antecedents, while in the physical examination the otoscopy showed a greyish image that protruded in the posterior tympanic areas (Fig. 1a). The preoperative audiometry reflected a nixed right hearing loss with a mean loss in conversational airway frequencies of 45 dB. Facial function was intact. The patient did not report any changes in her sense of taste. Radiological study using computed axial tomography (CAT scan) revealed a mass in the right tympanic box adjacent to the third segment of the facial nerve but independent of it (Fig. 1b and c). This mass occupied the epitympanum, surrounding the ossicular chain, without lytic images at this level. Differential diagnosis, using this technique, was considered from cholesteatoma, jugulotympanic glomus and neurinoma of the facial nerve.

Chorda tympani schwannoma: one new case revealed during malignant otitis externa and review of the literature.
Facial nerve schwannomas (FNS) are a rare entity that are poorly reported in literature. Although the estimated prevalence is extremely low, FNS are the most common primary tumor of the facial nerve. FNS occur throughout the course of the facial nerve and its branches, and chorda tympani schwannomas are quite rare. In 2010, Huoh and Cheung reported that seven additional chorda tympani schwannom...
متن کاملChorda tympani neuroma masquerading as cholesteatoma.
Facial nerve neuromas occur throughout the course of the facial nerve and its branches, however lesions occurring on the chorda tympani branch are exceptionally rare. We present a case where the diagnosis was made intra-operatively; the patient was pre-operatively thought to have had a cholesteatoma. Total resection is the treatment of choice for these cases. Early diagnosis, aided by high reso...

Dysgeusia, characterized as an altered perception of taste to any one of the four major tastant qualities (sweet, salt, sour, and bitter), is frequently experienced after dental anesthesia and neuroma (middle ear) surgery. Many medications, ranging from antiinflammatory drugs and protease inhibitors to antihypertensive drugs such as amiloride, have also been found to disrupt gustatory perceptio...
متن کاملANATOMICAL VARIATIONS OF THE CHORDA TYMPANI NERVE
The author studied anatomical variations of the origin of the chorda tympani nerve from the mastoid portion of the facial nerve. The studies were performed on 200 specimens of human temporal bone. It was found that the chorda tympani may arise from the facial nerve in three levels: most commonly from the mid third of its mastoid segment (70%), less commonly from the proximal third (20%), an...

The left side of the tongue of the Mongolian gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus, was experimentally innervated with both chorda tympani nerves. While this dual innervation did not increase the number or volume of fungiform taste buds on the left side, at least half of the taste buds were dually innervated since they could be neurotrophically maintained by either chorda tympani nerve. Impulse dischar...
